Fundz for Fractional Advisors and Independent Consultants
A complete blueprint for fractional executives, transformation advisors, and independent consultants finding clients through signal-driven outreach. Daily workflow, signal interpretation, Mandate setups, notification config, Engage templates, sub-persona branches, and power-user tactics.
The job to be done
Independent advisory work is a right-place, right-time business. The bottleneck is rarely capability and almost always pipeline visibility. By the time a funded company has decided they need outside help, they have already asked their VC for a recommendation, and you were not in the room.
The job Fundz does for you: get you in the room earlier. At the moment of the trigger event, not 30 days later. The credibly first operator who shows up usually gets the conversation.
Who this playbook is for
Fundz works for any independent advisor whose pipeline runs on company-life-event triggers. Three sub-variants of this persona use Fundz in slightly different ways. Find the one that fits your practice and follow that branch wherever this playbook breaks out by sub-variant.
- Marketing and growth advisors — fractional CMOs, demand-gen consultants, brand strategists, growth marketers. Triggered primarily by new funding rounds, new CMO/VP Marketing hires, product launches, and hiring surges in marketing roles.
- Transformation and change advisors — executive coaches, organizational design consultants, post-merger integration leads, change management practitioners. Triggered by completed acquisitions, new CEO arrivals, restructures, and clusters of executive departures.
- Functional fractional executives — fractional CFOs, CROs, COOs, CHROs, CIOs. Triggered by executive departures in your specific function band, plus interim and contract role postings.
Quick start — first 30 minutes
The fastest path to value. Do these four steps in order. Each takes 5–10 minutes.
Step 1: Confirm your notification setup
Visit /account/email-notifications and verify the Daily Email Alerts toggle is on. Check that the event types most relevant to your sub-variant are enabled. Default is everything on; that is fine for week 1.
- Marketing/growth advisor: keep Funding Rounds and Executive Hires on; consider Product Launches.
- Transformation/change advisor: keep Acquisitions, Executive Hires, and SEC 8-K Filings on. Add Partnerships if you focus on integration work.
- Functional fractional: keep Executive Hires and SEC 8-K Filings on. Toggle others off if signal-to-noise is poor.
Step 2: Save three Mandates
Mandates are saved searches that run continuously and surface matches in your daily feed. Each takes 90 seconds to set up. Pick the three that match your sub-variant from the Mandate setups section below and save them on the relevant feed page (Fundings, Executives, Acquisitions, etc.).
Step 3: Build your Watchlist to 50–100 companies
Open /watchlist and add 50–100 companies in your industry and stage band. Click the heart icon on any company card across Fundings, Acquisitions, Hiring Intel, or Companies. The Watchlist is the long-tail trigger loop that produces most placed engagements over a 12-month cycle. See Watchlist strategy below for how to size and prune.
Step 4 (optional): Set up Engage if you ship outreach
If you do active outreach DMs, complete the /engage/setup wizard: connect Slack, write your ICP description, paste 3–5 voice samples (past outreach you wrote that worked), and upload your LinkedIn connections export. Skip this step if you only do warm intros and inbound. See Engage configuration for sub-variant-specific guidance.
How Fundz fits your practice
Fundz is a signal-intelligence platform: real-time funding rounds, executive hires and departures, M&A, contracts, product launches, and workplace sentiment shifts, paired with verified ICP-scored contacts and 200 mobile direct dials per month on the Strategic plan.
For independent advisory work, Fundz replaces the four hours per week most advisors lose to LinkedIn scrolling and Google Alert noise. The Daily Brief surfaces the 5–10 ICP-matched companies that triggered overnight; everything else is on-demand when you want to investigate further.
Signals and what they mean for you
The same signal means different things to different advisors. Below is how each major signal type translates into a sub-variant-specific opening for outreach.
Funding rounds
Browse on /fundings. Filter by stage (Seed, Series A, Series B, etc.), industry, location, and amount.
- Marketing/growth advisor: Series A and Seed companies that just raised $2–25M typically cannot justify a full-time CMO yet, but desperately need senior marketing strategy for the next 6–18 months. Speed matters — reach out within 14 days of close.
- Transformation/change advisor: Series B+ raises often signal upcoming organizational scaling pain. Watch the next 60–120 days for hiring surges and team-restructure signals before reaching out.
- Functional fractional: Match raise size to your stage band. Sub-$10M rarely justifies a full-time CXO at your level; that is your window.
Executive hires
Browse on /executives. Filter by company, position, location, date.
- Marketing/growth advisor: A new CMO or VP Marketing in their first 90 days is when budgets get re-evaluated and outside advisors get hired. This is your highest-conversion outreach signal.
- Transformation/change advisor: A new CEO in their first 100 days will scope outside coaching, alignment work, and team off-sites. Reach out at the 30-day mark when the diagnostic phase ends and the action phase begins.
- Functional fractional: The departure of the predecessor in your function (visible on the same feed) is your stronger signal — the 60–90 day gap before the permanent replacement starts is when you bridge.
SEC 8-K material events
Browse on /sec-filings. Filter by item type for the events most relevant to your sub-variant. Fundz adds AI-generated red-flag analysis to every 8-K, surfacing the material details in plain English.
- Marketing/growth advisor: Less directly relevant. Skim 8.01 (Other Events) for marketing-relevant disclosures like new strategic partnerships.
- Transformation/change advisor: Item type 5.02 (executive departures) is your highest-value 8-K filter. Bookmark /sec-filings?item_type=5.02 for direct access. Multiple 5.02s on the same company within 6 months is the leadership-crisis signal.
- Functional fractional: Item types 5.02 (exec departures) and 4.02 (restatement of prior financial statements) are sale-prep or distress signals. CFO/finance function fractionals especially benefit from monitoring 4.02.
Acquisitions
Browse on /acquisitions. Filter by acquirer, acquiree, deal size, date.
- Marketing/growth advisor: Acquired companies in their first 6 months of integration often need brand consolidation and go-to-market alignment work.
- Transformation/change advisor: This is your highest-conversion signal type. Both the acquirer and the acquired company need integration leadership during transition. Look for deals $50M–$1B in deal size where dedicated outside coaching is justified.
- Functional fractional: Track for 9 months post-close — predictable senior departures during integration create replacement search opportunities.
Vacancy aging and reposted roles (Hiring Intel)
Visit /hiring-intel for the org-grouped intent feed. The vacancy aging signal fires at 45 / 60 / 90 / 120 day thresholds; the role-reposted signal fires when a search has been re-listed (usually meaning the previous search failed).
- Marketing/growth advisor: A 60+ day open marketing role often means the company is struggling to define what they actually need — a fractional advisor framing the role can be more useful than a candidate.
- Transformation/change advisor: Multiple aged senior roles on the same org is a leadership-stuck signal. Combine with new-CEO data.
- Functional fractional: This is your single highest-converting signal — especially the reposted-role signal. The in-house team is stuck; a fractional bridge plus a hand-off to a permanent hire is exactly your offer.
WorkVibz sentiment shifts
Composite employee sentiment trending down 2+ points in 90 days is a cultural or operational pain signal. Visible on the Deep Dive page for any company. Most relevant for transformation advisors and CHRO-band fractionals.
Product launches
Browse on /products. A launch with no announced go-to-market lead is a tell that strategy support is needed — primarily a marketing/growth advisor signal.
Daily workflow
A practical rhythm that takes ~30 minutes a day. Tune to your own schedule.
7:30 AM ET — The morning brief
The Daily Brief email lands at 7:30 AM ET with the 5–10 ICP-matched companies that triggered overnight. Open it on your phone over coffee. For each one that fits your sub-variant, mentally tag it as same-day outreach, add to Watchlist, or skip.
9–10 AM ET — Same-day outreach window
Open Fundz on your laptop. For the same-day-outreach companies, click into the Deep Dive page (/companies/[id]), read the FundzIQ summary, and copy the verified contact's mobile number or email. Send a personalized text or DM via Engage by 10 AM. Speed wins fractional engagements.
Midday — Watchlist scan
A 5-minute check on /watchlist or your Mandate matches to see if any tracked company moved into your buying window since morning. Most days this turns up nothing; the days it does, you are first in line.
End of day — Inbox-order plays for tomorrow
If you have a follow-up landing tomorrow morning, send it now. Top-of-inbox controls first impression — a recovery message landing 12 hours after a weak one performs better than the same message 24 hours later.
Mandate setups by sub-variant
A Mandate is a saved search that runs continuously. Save three (the three most relevant to your sub-variant). Open them once a day. If a company appears in two of three at once, that is high-priority outreach.
For marketing and growth advisors
For transformation and change advisors
For functional fractional executives
How to save a Mandate
Apply your filters on the relevant feed (Fundings for funding mandates, Hiring Intel for hiring-intent mandates, etc.), then click "Save & Email Daily" or "Save as Mandate." Hiring Intel mandates send a weekly digest Monday at 7 AM ET pre-scored against your ICP. Other event-summary digests follow your selected daily/weekly cadence.
Watchlist strategy
How to size it
50–100 companies is the right band for fractional work. Below 30 is too small for the long-tail trigger loop to produce; above 150 is more than you can meaningfully act on.
What to put on it
- All current and recent client orgs (track their next signal cycles)
- 20–30 high-fit prospects you have not yet reached but want to monitor
- 10–20 industry leaders whose moves you want to track for context (acquisitions in their orbit move your prospects)
- Sub-variant focus: marketing/growth advisors should bias toward Series A/B SaaS; transformation advisors should bias toward 100–1,000 employee companies in restructure-prone industries (life sciences, tech, financial services); functional fractionals should bias toward your stage band
When to prune
Quarterly. Drop companies with zero signals in 90 days. Replace with fresh prospects from the previous quarter's Mandate matches.
Watchlist Aging Alerts (Strategic only)
For companies on your Watchlist with senior open roles, Fundz fires real-time email alerts at 45 / 60 / 90 / 120 days open (one alert per crossing per company). This is the highest-leverage alert in the system for functional fractionals — it surfaces stuck searches at the moment they cross into "we need outside help" territory.
Notification configuration
Fundz has six alert pipelines. You do not need all of them. Below is a recommended configuration per sub-variant. All settings live at /account/email-notifications except where noted.
Alerts to enable for everyone
- Daily Brief email: on. The 7:30 AM ET morning surface.
- Event Summaries (daily): on for at least your top 1–2 saved filters. This is what makes the Daily Brief useful — without saved filters, your Daily Brief is empty.
- Hiring Intel Mandates: on (Monday 7 AM ET weekly digest). Keep up to 3 active mandates here.
Alerts to consider
- Watchlist Aging Alerts (Strategic): high-value for functional fractionals, medium-value for transformation advisors, low-value for marketing/growth advisors.
- Slack notifications: connect at /account/connectors if you want real-time DMs in your workspace. Default config (Funding=on, others=off) is a good starting point. Add Acquisitions if you are a transformation advisor.
- Saved Questions (AI-features users): save 3–5 high-leverage questions ("Which of my Watchlist companies showed signal in the last 7 days?") and let AI answer weekday mornings.
Alerts to skip (most of the time)
- FundzWatch domain monitoring: only useful if you operate a custom domain-watch list. Independent advisors usually do not.
- FCM mobile push: off by default; only enable if you genuinely need real-time mobile alerts. The morning email rhythm is enough for most advisors.
Engage configuration
Engage drafts signal-anchored DMs for you using the actual trigger event as context. Reply rates on signal-anchored outreach run four-to-six times higher than cold. Skip Engage entirely if you only do warm intros and inbound; it is built for advisors who ship volume.
The setup wizard
Walk through /engage/setup. Five steps:
- Connect Slack. OAuth install lets Engage post draft DMs into a channel for review before sending.
- Your ICP. Free-text description. See sub-variant guidance below for what to write.
- Voice samples. Paste 3–5 examples of past outreach you wrote that worked. Engage learns your tone from these. More is better up to 5; below 3 the drafts feel generic.
- LinkedIn export. Generate a CSV from LinkedIn (Settings → Data Privacy → Get a copy of your data → Connections) and upload. Engage uses your network to identify warm-intro paths.
- Preparing queue. System processes the CSV. Usually 2–5 minutes.

First-week DM cadence
- Day 1–2: Send 3–5 DMs anchored on signals from your morning brief. Read each draft before sending.
- Day 3–5: Increase to 5–8 per day as you calibrate. Adjust voice samples if drafts feel off.
- Day 7+: 8–15 DMs per week is the sustainable healthy range.
Outreach DM templates
Engage drafts the actual DM for you using the specific signal as the anchor. The shape that works:

Power-user tactics
Search Brief (Strategic only)
On any Hiring Intel posting, click the "Search Brief" button to generate a Claude-powered one-pager: company snapshot, why-now, comp benchmark, search angle, sourcing pools, talking points. Strategic users get 50 briefs per day, cached per posting. Useful as the prep doc before a discovery call.
Trends page (Pro+)
Visit /trends once a quarter to see funding and hiring volume trends by location and industry. Useful for repositioning your ICP — if your industry vertical is decelerating and an adjacent one is growing, your Mandate filters should shift to follow.
Companies on the Move panel
On the dashboard, this panel ranks companies by composite recent activity (funding + hiring + product launches). Use it as a discovery surface for prospects you would not have found through filtered Mandates — especially companies hitting multiple signals simultaneously.
Cross-mandate priority
When a company appears in two or more of your Mandates simultaneously (e.g., recent funding AND new CMO in last 30 days), that is your highest-priority outreach for the day. The dual-trigger pattern compresses the buying window dramatically — same-day outreach beats next-week outreach by a wide margin.
Buyer Intent Score on Deep Dive
Every company's Deep Dive page (/companies/[id]) shows a Buyer Intent Score gauge (0–100). Below 50 is a stretch; 70+ is a same-day outreach. Use this as your tie-breaker when triaging the morning brief.
What success looks like at week 4
By the end of your first month on the platform, healthy usage looks like:
- 50–100 companies on your Watchlist, actively monitored
- 3 Mandates running daily
- 8–15 same-day outreach DMs per week, each anchored to a real signal
- 1–2 qualified discovery calls per week from cold outreach
- 1 net-new engagement closing within 8–12 weeks (the typical fractional sales cycle)
If you are not seeing this shape after four weeks, the most common cause is Mandates that are too narrow. Loosen the industry filter or expand the funding range and re-test. Email support@fundz.net and we will look at your filter setup with you.
Common mistakes
- Mandates set too narrow. Three Mandates each returning two results per week starves the top of your funnel. Loosen until each Mandate returns 5–15 per week.
- Watchlist too small. Fewer than 30 companies and the long-tail trigger loop will not produce. Build to 50–100.
- Treating every signal as urgent. Not every funding round needs same-day outreach. Triage by ICP fit first, signal recency second, Buyer Intent Score third.
- Skipping the Deep Dive before sending. A 90-second read of the Deep Dive almost always yields the angle that the canned DM does not. Worth the time.
- Sending generic DMs. Engage drafts off the actual signal — let it. A "saw your funding round" message is twice as effective when it cites the round size and lead investor.
- Ignoring the Buyer Intent Score. The score is the cleanest single triage signal in the platform. 70+ jumps the queue.
- Not pruning the Watchlist. Quarterly cleanup keeps the long-tail loop fresh. A Watchlist of 100 stale companies is worse than 50 active ones.
- Functional fractional ignoring vacancy aging. If you are a fractional CFO/CRO/etc, the Strategic-tier Watchlist Aging Alerts at 45/60/90/120 days are your highest-converting signal. Skipping Strategic is leaving the best alert on the table.
Troubleshooting
My Daily Brief email is empty or thin
You probably have not saved any filter mandates yet, or your Mandates are too narrow. The Daily Brief consolidates your Mandate matches; without saved filters, it has nothing to surface. Save 2–3 broader Mandates and wait 48 hours.
Engage drafts feel generic or off-tone
Add more voice samples. Engage learns your tone from past outreach you paste in — below 3 samples it will feel generic. Aim for 5 samples covering a few different signal types (one per: funding, exec change, acquisition, etc.).
Watchlist Aging Alerts are not firing
Vacancy Aging Alerts are Strategic-tier only. Verify your plan at /account/subscription. If you are on Strategic and still not seeing them, confirm you have at least one tracked org with a senior open role that has been posted 45+ days — the dispatcher fires daily 8 AM ET against new threshold crossings only.
I am getting too many alerts
Disable the event types you do not need at /account/email-notifications. Specifically: most fractional advisors should turn off Crowdfundings and Form D unless those are part of your prospect base. If Slack notifications are firing too often, log into /account/connectors and tighten the per-event-type toggles.
I am not finding any companies that match my Mandates
Almost always a too-narrow filter problem. Common fixes: widen the funding amount range, add adjacent industries, drop the location filter, or increase the date window. Email support and we can audit your filters.
My contacts are missing or look wrong
Fundz pulls verified contacts from multiple sources. If a specific company is missing data, click the company on Deep Dive and check the contact panel; if a contact is verifiably wrong, use the in-app feedback to flag it. Mobile direct dials are gated to Strategic tier (200 per month bundled).
Bonus: the Partner Program
If you regularly recommend tools to your clients — sales intelligence, contact data, signal monitoring — the Fundz Partner Program is built for fractional and independent advisors. Your clients get the platform at a discount, you get rev-share on conversions, and the resulting intelligence keeps feeding your own engagement pipeline. Email john@fundz.net to discuss terms.
