Description

Frontier Computing, a Cambridge-based startup, has raised $10 million in pre-seed funding to develop biocomputing systems using lab-cultured neural tissue as a computing substrate. The round was led by General Catalyst, with participation from Amino Collective, LocalGlobe, KAYA, and Long Journey Ventures. Founder Michael Domarkas, 19, has been experimenting with neural tissue cultivation since age 17. The funding will support team growth and wetlab operations as Frontier targets a 500-million-neuron cluster by January 2027.

About

Frontier Computing is a Cambridge-based biotech startup that grows lab-cultured neural tissue as a computing substrate called 'wetware' for AI model training. The company has overcome oxygen-supply limitations that previously restricted neural tissue growth to roughly a million neurons, enabling cultivation at significantly larger scales. Their biological neurons require less data for training and can learn new information without retraining from scratch. The startup has already demonstrated capabilities by training its system to play Frogger with a 92% success rate after one hour of learning.
