Description

SEPTA received a $13.3 million federal grant from the Federal Transit Administration's Rail Vehicle Replacement Grant Program to begin replacing its aging Regional Rail fleet. The current Silverliner IV cars, built between 1974 and 1976, were pulled from service last year following safety inspections and repairs after a series of fires. The grant represents a portion of the estimated $2 billion needed to replace the entire 234-car fleet over approximately 10 years. The funding will help SEPTA modernize its rail system and bring it into a state of good repair.
