The grants will support the continuation and expansion of Hawaiʻi's largest disaster health cohort, allowing researchers to follow 2,000 adult participants from Lahaina and Kula while expanding to include 800 children. The funding will enable the study to track health outcomes through 2031, examining how wildfire exposure, displacement, and stress affect respiratory health, mental health, development, and education. The study aims to identify problems early so families, schools, and health systems can intervene and better protect communities after future disasters.
