BlueScope, BHP, Rio Tinto, and Woodside Energy have selected the Kwinana Industrial Area, south of Perth, to develop Australia’s largest ironmaking electric smelting furnace pilot plant. The pilot plant aims to test technology to produce lower-carbon emissions molten iron using direct reduced iron (DRI)-ESF technology, with the aim of decarbonising steelmaking and ensuring the longevity of Australia's iron ore industry.
