Pittsburgh Regional Transit's board has awarded a $99.8 million construction contract to Independence Excavating for the second phase of the University Line, the bus rapid transit project to connect Downtown with Oakland and other eastern neighborhoods. The next phase spans three miles from Uptown to Oakland along Fifth and Forbes avenues in the Hill District, and includes 18 new transit stations, two miles of protected bike lanes, and modernization of thirty-nine intersections. The construction is estimated to take 24 to 30 months to complete.
