A nationwide US cleanup programme led by William & Mary's Virginia Institute of Marine Science and Batten School has removed over 14,000 derelict fishing traps weighing nearly 600,000 pounds in two years. The programme has now secured approximately $1.24 million in NOAA funding to expand its efforts. Eleven new projects across seven states will use the funding to remove another 15,450 traps while creating or sustaining 128 coastal jobs. The work aims to protect marine animals, support fisheries, reduce bycatch, and collect data to prevent fishing gear loss.

The Nationwide Fishing Trap Removal, Assessment and Prevention Program (TRAP) is a coordinated effort led by William & Mary's Virginia Institute of Marine Science and Batten School, supported by NOAA's Marine Debris Program. The program removes derelict fishing gear and documents trapped wildlife to protect marine ecosystems and coastal fisheries. In its first two years, TRAP removed over 14,000 fishing traps and documented nearly 36,000 trapped animals across 15 US states.
